SS Great Britain revisited
In 1970 Brunel’s innovative iron-hulled screw-propellered ship, SS Great Britain, returned to the Great Western Dockyard in Bristol; returned, in fact, to the same dry dock she launched from in 1843.
Gail and I were last on board her together in April 1999, at our wedding. Since then I’ve been back, once, for a party (or should that be wake?) marking the acquisition of the company I then worked for, at which founder and CEO Charles Grimsdale played drums for tribute band Def, Dumb and Blondie. Gail has been back too, but we’d never been together as a family until today.
She’s well worth a visit.
